Materials and Tools Required
Materials
In this lesson, I will be discussing the essential materials and tools needed for creating felted faces. Obviously we need wool. I make a lot of these faces for my fairies. So I use a coarser wool first. Sometimes I would refer this as the core wool. Meaning the inside of my felted ball is not merino wool but a cheaper wool. If you don't have this, don't worry. You can of course use just Merino wool for the whole head.
I would recommend that you invest in a merino wool of around 18 Micron. Micron is a measurement used to determent the softness of the wool. The lower the number the softer the wool. You can watch a video I made a few years ago about microns and what it means here.
I like my fairy faces to be as smooth as possible. If you use a micron higher then 18, the faces will be hairier. Meaning there will be more loose single strands of wool around your felt ball, which is the base for the face. . It won't simply be as smooth, as it's physically not possible to get a smooth felt from thicker wool.
Material:
(18 micron )skin tone Merino wool. You need very little. Less then 10 gram
Optional is a coarse wool for inside the head.
PS: If you don't use a coarse wool for the inside of the head then you will need more Merino wool.
PS: I have put together a face making kit. For your convenience it's available here. If you think you need one. It includes all you need.
